How to Join a Historically Black Sorority

Doing your research isn't just about stalking the current chapter member's socials. It is about watching YouTube videos that go into depth about joining and articulating, for yourself, why you are interested in joining in the first place. This list of to-dos may or may not work for everybody, but there is something for most.

Clarreese and her sorors

  1. Attend the gatherings and socials of your organization of interest. This gives you the opportunity to get to know those in the organization, engage in volunteering, and become a person of interest should they be working on forming a intake class in coming semesters or seasons. This seems like a no brainer, but plenty of times, I have seen that it is not. Attend and act accordingly (this does mean not wearing the sorority's colors-- leggings and a graphic tee hasn't hurt a single person, promise).

  2. When they say be discrete, that includes them too. It's great to have interest in an organization. You're hanging on to their every word every chance you talk to them. You think that they are doing the same when they engage with you. That's good to be positive about it. Keep the positivity! Just keep in mind what you share and how you share it. You don't have to tell them your interested in joining the organization, you've signed the socials attendance sheet almost ten times already. Instead, invite them to things you're interested in or ask about how the organization can help you realize different goals and dreams! We stress the importance of being able to do for the org, but what can the org do for you? It's a valid question and one that could probably even be answered better in the private study of Google. At the end of the day, even they probably aren't sharing everything. Some things you don't need to know. Vice versa: there are some things they don't need to know! 😂

  3. Stay on top of your academics. It can be so tantalizing to attend one more social gathering, but at the end of the day--you're a student. No matter which org you are interested in, they all value scholarship in some way, shape, or form. That said here's number four:

  4. Before committing, make sure your values and ethics align. There will be members that you are at ends with and times in which where it feels difficult to continue. Remember your why. If it begins and ends at the letters only, you may be in trouble. Treat this whole process like dating. If you are with your partner for the face value or bank balance, it might not be as beautiful a relationship that it could be. However, if you can harmonize, it'll be glorious. Not say that it won't be tough sometimes, but you'll be able to stay in it. More on How to Stay in it here. This is a lifetime thing. This is a business thing. You're looking to be part of a legacy. Make sure it's one you will be proud to claim. Thus, and finally, number five:

  5. Whatever you do sis, keep it cute sis.

All the Best,

CLG (Clarreese La'Nay Greene)
